Ties are a wonderful accessory, which is why so many men love them. The diversity of ties in all their colours, patterns and designs can be astounding and is a testament to their versatility.

Thankfully, good quality ties do not need to be expensive. We at Tieroom are proud of our high-quality ties at affordable prices, as can be seen in our amazing collection of neckties.

However, there are some very expensive ties in the world. This article will explore the most expensive tie in the world. We will also look at some of the other most expensive ties ever created.

The Suashish Necktie

The most expensive ever created to date is known as the Suashish Necktie. It’s a ‘handcrafted in India’ tie that was created by the Satya Paul Design Studio. Its price? That would be an astounding €189,190 or well over $200,000 at the time.

Luxury and extravagance were the inspiration for the tie, and it certainly offers that. The aubergine-hued tie is made from silk of the highest quality and is encrusted with 271 diamonds with a total weight of 77 carats. It is further embellished with 150 grams of gold, for an effect that is luxurious in the extreme.

The tie was first launched at the “Cultural Ties” fashion show in Mumbai on October 29th, 2003. The man wearing it down the runway was Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan, himself a film actor well-known for his impeccable dress sense. Khan being the man chosen to show off this tie was totally appropriate, given that no industry does glitz and glamour quite like Bollywood!

The Man, The Studio

One thing we noticed in our research for this article is that no one else bothered to give some insight into the Indian fashion house itself. The Satya Paul Design Studio is located in the Gurgaon district, officially known as the Gurugram district, a major satellite city to the southwest of New Delhi in northern India.

The man behind the fashion studio was Satya Paul, an icon of Indian fashion who died on January 7th, 2021 at the age of 79. Paul is credited with having reinvented and modernized the traditional sari or saree worn by most Indian women, as well as having been one of the more unique members of India’s thriving fashion industry.

Paul was obsessed with fabrics and using them in new, unorthodox ways. Together with his son, he was also the founder of India’s first designer label in 1986.

His legacy was immense. One tweet read: “Satya Paul, a shining example of what it means to live with immeasurable passion and unrelenting involvement. The distinct vision you brought to the Indian fashion industry is a beautiful tribute to this. A privilege to have had you amongst us.”

Perhaps it should not be a surprise that it was Satya Paul that would design and create the world’s most expensive tie. His focus may have been women’s fashion, but Paul was undoubtedly a trendsetter who loved a good challenge.

Other Very Expensive Ties

Of course, there have been other very expensive ties made, including by some of the most famous names in fashion. The likes of Ralph Lauren have special edition ties that are quite expensive.

Not all expensive ties have to cost thousands of dollars or euros but $250 for a single tie is still asking a lot! That is what it will cost you to buy a tie from Charvet Place Vendôme, a legendary shirt maker and tailor founded in 1838. Charvet was thought to be the first shirt shop in the world. The atelier claims to use a specific silk fabric for its ties.

There is also the ‘Tokyo Tie’ by Italian fashion house, Ermenegildo Zegna. As its name suggests, this limited and special edition pure silk tie features a print of the renowned Mount Fuji. As of 2024, this print was actually out of stock, and would have cost $260 when in stock.

Not to be outdone was the French house, Christian Lacroix, with its ‘Fantasy Pattern’ tie. What set this Lacroix tie apart was that every tie was cut in a unique pattern, meaning that no two of these ties were identical. That distinct design feature, together with being in finest pure silk and the iconic Lacroix name explain why these ties sold out very quickly, even at $1,150.

The Florentine fashion house Stefano Ricci is one of the most exclusive luxury brands in Italy. Its ‘Formal Crystal Tie’ is so named because it is embellished with miniature crystals. To be more precise, each tie features at least 3,000 Swarovski crystals and can cost in excess of €1,000.

The ‘Gold Tie’ by Swiss textile company EMPA is a thing of both beauty and technology. The textile engineers at the St. Gallen-based company took ten years to create a thread that combined pure silk with 24-karat gold. One could call it the perfect blend of state-of-the-art technology and luxury fashion. It costs over €7,000.

Stefano Ricci did it again, this time with its ‘Diamond Plated Tie,’ which is also embedded with precious crystals. However, this tie costs a jaw-dropping €25,796.

Luckily for most of us, ties are typically far more affordable than these pieces of art. Nevertheless, these super-expensive ties are testament to the enduring appeal and power of men’s neckties.
